Demonstrating assertive behavior is an essential interpersonal skill that opens the way for honest communication with others, and the possibilities of achieving effective mutually beneficial outcomes. Being assertive is the direct and appropriate expression of one’s feelings, beliefs, and opinions; it means standing up for your legitimate rights in such a way that the rights of others are not violated. Assertive behavior also involves recognizing one’s right to let others know how their behavior affects you and asking them to change that behavior. This workshop explores what it means to be assertive, and gives practical strategies on how to appropriately express assertive behavior in the workplace.
