Virtual Training and Your Path to Success

With Virtual Classes being more commonplace and convenient than ever, chances are (if you haven’t already), you will find yourself participating in one. They provide an excellent opportunity to keep your learning up to date, without having to leave your home or office. At ProTech, we offer hundreds of courses virtually, which makes keeping your learning up to date, simple. However, there are some helpful tips and checkpoints you should consider, in order to maximize your virtual learning experience.

Prepare
“Before anything else, Preparation is the key to success” Alexander Graham Bell.

Ten days prior to your course date, you will be forwarded an email from your ProTech Virtual Support Team. This message will contain some pertinent steps to follow to ensure you are well prepared for your upcoming course. You will want to review this information carefully, so as to ensure you have been placed in the correct course at the right date and time. You will want to consider whether there are time zone differentials, and we recommend timeanddate.com or www.thetimenow.com (WCAG 2.0 compatible) as useful tools to do so. You will also want to ensure that you have a headset with a microphone. It will prove invaluable to have yourself hands free, as well as it will improve the audio quality. Lastly, you will want to confirm that the location you will be training from has an adequate internet connection to ensure you can connect to our virtual classroom. There is nothing worse than logging on just minutes before a class starts to discover that a company firewall won’t grant you access!

Four days prior to class, you will receive another reminder email to confirm that you have successfully been able to connect to our classroom connection and that all is ready to go! At this point, we will want to be made aware of any issues. This will allow the appropriate time to remedy any connection hiccups. You should also be looking for course materials to arrive (either a hard copy or a digital copy depending on which you requested).

Communicate
Just prior to the day of the course, you will want to remind your colleagues that you will be attending a class and will be unavailable during that time. It can be easy to fall into a trap of distractions if you are taking the course by yourself and from home. Planning ahead to minimize any distractions, will set you well onto a path to success! You will want to set your out of office notifications on your email and phone, and ensure that your cell phone (or any other devices) are away, and silenced. If you will be working from your office, placing a sign at your work station stating, “Please do not disturb-attending virtual class” can discourage any visitor interruptions.

Participate
Playing an active role in the virtual classroom is most advantageous. It will keep you engaged and will help you learn, retain and exercise the material that is being taught. Don’t hesitate to raise your “virtual” hand when you have any questions, or anything to add to the discussion. This can often help others who may have similar questions and is an important part of the virtual experience. Should you need to step away from your computer, please let your instructor know via a private message. This will ensure they don’t call upon you in your absence, or mistake you for having technical troubles.
