Trends in Artificial Intelligence

Over the last few years, it has become apparent that AI is here to stay. Many organizations are now faced with the challenge of deciding if they should invest in AI development. With this decision, brings the question, what sort of AI should they implement? How should they plan for the changes that AI will bring to their industry and marketplace? The presentation looks at three of the most important trends that will shape the direction of AI development along with its anticipated impact upon business and society.

The first trend is technology itself. Machine learning, neural nets and other AI techniques have been around since the 1980’s. It is only with the recent advances in computing power that AI was able to be deployed in a cost-effective manner within operational environments. There are a number of emerging technologies that are showing faster than expected progress in increasing computational power. This advancement reduces costs, increases data storage and has the potential to radically increase the ability to deploy more powerful AI systems within even more environments. My presentation will cover some of the more innovative emerging technologies such as: quantum computing, swarm computing and the development of biological computers that uses DNA and proteins for computation and data storage.

The second major trend is disruptive innovation. As AI becomes more powerful, it introduces areas of application that are both novel and innovative such as the development of virtual twins, commodification of services and the ability to transform how almost all goods and services are delivered. The other side of disruptive innovation is that AI is producing ways of doing things that are divergent from the way people do things. From the development of AI designed products to new ways of communicating using languages that are developed by AI systems to talk to each other. We will highlight some of the more significant and important developments that characterize this trend.

And third is the impact and reaction of society to the inroads AI can make into every aspect of day-to-day life. There have been failures in the past to introduce AI in some areas because they were thoroughly rejected by consumers. How AI develops as an industry depends not just on technology, but by the way that technology is accepted or rejected by the marketplace and by how it is regulated by governments and others in positions of governance. This presentation will examine the recent history of the adoption and acceptance of AI in the marketplace as well as the current and likely future responses by the public, regulatory agencies and governments.
